Walk down Fourth Street on a Friday evening in late September and construction is still underway where Giorgio's Pizzeria will open. The Clement Street original has been slinging thin-crust pies in San Francisco for decades, and its owners picked San Rafael for the expansion, framed it for early 2026, and started construction months ago. The doors have not opened yet, and the build continues.
Two doors down, Madge & Me Hats has already been open since spring. Around the corner, Perform for Golf is booking simulator sessions in a storefront that used to sell something else entirely. A new indoor pickleball facility from Pickleball Organized LLC and Body Kinetics Health Club got its public announcement back on May 1 and is somewhere in the buildout now, betting that people will walk to a paddle court downtown instead of driving to a strip mall off the highway. None of that required a ribbon cutting to matter. It just happened.
That gap between what's promised and what's actually running is worth sitting with, because it's the same gap that shapes how anyone experiences Fourth Street this fall. The headline openings are still headlines. The calendar that's already locked in doesn't care.
What Was Supposed to Open by Now
Giorgio's isn't the only project whose opening date has moved. Hidden Splendor Beer, a new brewery and taproom from Dave McLean, the founder of Magnolia Brewing, was also pointed at early 2026 when the project first got announced. McLean has since put a new date on it himself.
"Come fall, Hidden Splendor will open its first restaurant/pub in San Rafael."
That's his word, not a permit filing, and "fall" still leaves room to run through December. Both projects share a pattern worth naming plainly: an established operator with a track record elsewhere doesn't rush a build to hit a press release date. Giorgio's has been serving the same neighborhood since a single family started it, and a second location isn't a pop-up, it's an investment they'll want to get right. The construction timeline reflects that care.
Neither business has said the delay changes what's coming, and there's no reason to assume otherwise. But if you're mapping out fall evenings on Fourth Street, treat both as bonus rounds rather than fixed points.
What's Already Running While the Signs Stay Dark
The two storefronts that quietly opened this year did it without the same fanfare, while a third project is still in buildout. Madge & Me Hats moved into a new West End location at 1570 Fourth Street this spring, a small retail bet on a stretch of the street that's been picking up foot traffic. Perform for Golf, at 1328 Fourth Street, occupies a space that would have been generic retail a decade ago and instead runs swing coaching and simulator time. The indoor pickleball concept from Pickleball Organized and Body Kinetics is a bigger square footage bet, and choosing downtown over a highway-adjacent building signals they're counting on evening walk-up traffic, not drive-up parking.
None of these needed a countdown. They're a reminder that the street's daily texture is carried as much by the businesses that showed up without a press cycle as by the ones still finishing their buildout.
The Three Fridays Left
The West End Fridays Block Party has been running on Fourth Street between F and G Streets since August 21, sponsored by Pint Size Lounge, six to nine on each scheduled date. Eight dates were set for the season: 8/21, 8/28, 9/4, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, and 10/16. That leaves three left as of this week.
| Date | What's Happening | Worth Knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, Oct 2 | West End Fridays Block Party, F-G Streets, 6-9 p.m. | Standard block party format, live music and food |
| Friday, Oct 9 | West End Fridays Block Party and Art Works Downtown's 2nd Friday Art Walk | The last overlap night of the season |
| Friday, Oct 16 | Final West End Fridays Block Party of 2026 | Closes out the eight-Friday run |
The October 9 date is the one to actually plan around. Art Works Downtown, the 40,000-square-foot building on Fourth Street that houses three galleries and roughly 27 art studios, runs its Art Walk on the second Friday of every month, five to eight in the evening. That's the same night as a West End Fridays date, which means the studio tour and the block party overlap from six to eight on the same street for the final time this year. After October, the Art Walk keeps its own calendar (November 13, December 11) with no block party alongside it until next summer.
After the Block Parties End
The West End Fridays wrapping up on October 16 doesn't mean Fourth Street goes quiet. The city's own fall calendar has three more fixed dates:
- October 24 — Trick or Treat on Fourth Street and the Pet Costume Contest
- October through November — Dia de los Muertos altar displays along the corridor
- November 26 — the 45th Annual San Rafael Holiday of Lights and Winter Wonderland, timed to Shop Small Saturday
That last one has run for 45 years, which puts it well ahead of anything currently under construction on the block. It's also the point where the street's attention shifts from patio season to a lit-up, walkable holiday format, whether or not Giorgio's has its doors open by then.
Reading the Street Correctly
None of this is an argument that the delayed openings don't matter. Giorgio's brings a proven pizza format that Fourth Street doesn't currently have in that exact style, and Hidden Splendor's arrival from a brewer with Magnolia's reputation is a real addition to the block's evening options. Both will likely be worth the wait once they land.
Fall on Fourth Street already has plenty to fill a calendar while those two projects finish. The three West End Fridays still on the books, the Art Walk overlap on October 9, the Halloween event on the 24th, and a 45-year-old holiday tradition on November 26 are dates you can actually put on a calendar right now. The hat shop and the golf simulator are open now, and the pickleball facility is moving through its buildout.
Giorgio's Pizzeria and Hidden Splendor Beer both have a place waiting on Fourth Street, and the fall calendar has room for them whenever their doors open.
